National Day, school winter break and New Year all land within a few weeks of each other. Here's how to plan early, travel smarter and still get the dates you want.

Every year, the same thing happens. The weather in the UAE turns perfect, the calendar fills with long weekends, and suddenly everyone wants to fly at once. If you've ever looked at fares in late November and wondered how they doubled overnight, this guide is for you.
December is the busiest travel month of the year for UAE residents. Eid Al Etihad — UAE National Day — on 2 and 3 December, the school winter break and the New Year holiday all fall within a few weeks of each other. That's wonderful for family time, and challenging for anyone who books late.
Why fares rise so quickly in December
Airlines price seats in fare classes. The cheapest classes on popular dates sell first, and once they're gone, the next seat costs more. On routes our travellers fly most — Manila, Cebu, Colombo, Istanbul, Tbilisi — the low fares for the peak weeks often disappear months ahead.
Hotels work the same way. Family rooms, connecting rooms and anything with a sea view are the first to go, especially around New Year's Eve.
The best time to book a December trip is the moment you know your leave dates — not the week before you fly.
Your early-planning timeline
- Now (October): confirm your leave and your children's school break dates, then get fare quotes for two or three date options.
- Early November: book flights and hotels, and start any visa applications — consulates get busy before the holidays too.
- Mid-November: arrange travel insurance, airport transfers and any tours you don't want to miss.
- Two weeks before: check passport validity, print or download documents, and confirm your baggage allowance.
- 48 hours before: check in online and plan your trip to the airport — terminals are at their busiest in December.
Where UAE residents are heading this winter
Home for the holidays
For many of our travellers, the winter break means going home to the Philippines for Christmas and New Year. These are some of the most in-demand seats of the whole year, so if you're flying to Manila, Cebu or Clark, book as early as you can.
Short escapes with real winter
Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan and Türkiye are a short flight away and offer something you won't find at home in December: snow, mountain villages and cosy cafés. They're ideal for a National Day long weekend.
Sun, beaches and island time
If your idea of a holiday is a beach, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Bali are popular year-end choices. Resort prices peak over Christmas and New Year, so travelling in early December is often better value.
Staycations and local tours
Not every holiday needs a passport. Desert camps, mountain stays in Ras Al Khaimah and hotel staycations are perfect in the cooler months — and they book out too, so plan ahead.
Don't forget the paperwork
- Check that every passport in your family is valid well beyond your return date — many countries expect at least six months.
- Find out whether you need a visa for your destination, and how long processing takes. Rules depend on your nationality, so don't assume a friend's experience applies to you.
- Keep your UAE residence visa valid for your return.
- Carry copies of bookings and insurance, both printed and on your phone.
