One of the best things about living in the UAE is how much of the world is just a few hours away. A National Day long weekend or a few days of annual leave is all it takes to swap the city for mountains, old towns or island beaches.
Here are seven short-haul favourites our consultants book again and again in winter.
1. Georgia — mountains, wine and warm welcomes
Tbilisi's old town, sulphur baths and lively food scene make a brilliant city break, and in winter you can add a trip up to the snowy slopes of Gudauri. It's a favourite for first-time snow experiences.
2. Armenia — history and snowy monasteries
Yerevan is easy to explore on foot, and day trips take you to ancient monasteries framed by snow-covered mountains. It's quieter than some neighbours and great value.
3. Azerbaijan — Baku's old and new
Baku combines a walled old city with striking modern architecture along the Caspian. Add a trip to the mountains around Gabala or Shahdag for winter scenery.
4. Türkiye — Istanbul and beyond
Istanbul is wonderful in the cooler months: fewer crowds, warm tea and endless history. With a few more days, Cappadocia's landscapes are unforgettable — and sometimes dusted with snow.
5. Oman — road trips and mountain air
You don't always need a flight. Oman's mountains, wadis and coastline are perfect in winter for a road trip or a short hop to Muscat.
6. Sri Lanka — beaches, tea country and wildlife
Sri Lanka packs a lot into a short trip: beaches in the south, cool tea plantations in the hills and wildlife safaris. Winter is a lovely time to visit the west and south coasts.
7. The Maldives — the ultimate reset
Just a few hours away, the Maldives is the classic winter escape for couples and honeymooners. Prices peak over Christmas and New Year, so early December or January can offer better value.
Making a short trip feel longer
- Choose morning departures and evening returns to maximise your time.
- Stay central so you're not losing hours to transport.
- Pre-book airport transfers and one or two key tours.
- Pack layers — mountain temperatures can drop well below freezing at night.
Three days in the mountains can feel like a week away when everything is arranged before you land.
